Chikankari is the delicate white-on-white shadow embroidery of Lucknow, and it never goes out of style. This straight kurta is cut from fine cambric cotton and hand-embroidered with bakhiya (shadow work), phanda knots and jaali eyelets around the neckline, sleeves and hem.
Design
- Round neck with a short front slit and a fabric tie
- Three-quarter sleeves and side slits for easy movement
- Calf length - about 44 inches for size M
- Semi-sheer fabric; wear it with a slip or camisole
How to style it
Pair it with white palazzos or a cigarette pant for office days, or with a pastel dupatta and juttis for daytime functions and Eid gatherings. Silver oxidised jhumkas suit the soft white embroidery beautifully.
Care
Hand embroidery is best looked after gently. Soak in cold water with a mild liquid detergent, swish lightly and do not scrub or wring. Dry in the shade and iron from the reverse on a medium setting so the embroidery stays raised. Small irregularities in the stitching are the mark of handwork, not a defect.
