Kolhapuri chappals have been made by artisan families in southern Maharashtra and northern Karnataka for centuries. This unisex pair follows the classic open design: a flat leather sole, a broad cross-strap and a braided toe loop, all cut and stitched by hand.
Craftsmanship
- Vegetable-tanned buffalo leather in a natural tan that darkens beautifully with wear
- Hand-braided toe loop and punched pattern on the strap
- Multi-layer leather sole hand-stitched with leather thongs, with a thin rubber grip layer underneath
- Each pair varies slightly in shade and texture
Breaking them in
New leather chappals feel firm and may rub at first. Wear them at home for short periods for the first few days; a little coconut oil on the inside of the strap softens the leather. They mould to your feet within a couple of weeks.
Care
Leather soles are not made for heavy rain. If they get wet, dry them at room temperature in the shade, never in direct sun or near a heater, and apply a thin coat of leather balm once dry. Wipe with a damp cloth to clean.
