Caring for cotton, linen and rayon in Indian weather

· By Kapaas Kahani Studio · 2 min read

Breathable natural and plant-based fabrics are the backbone of an Indian wardrobe. With a little care they last for years, but the wrong wash or a week of monsoon humidity can fade colours and weaken fibres quickly. Here is what we recommend at our studio.

Cotton

Cotton is forgiving, but printed and dyed cotton needs gentle handling in the first few washes. Wash new block-printed or deep-coloured pieces separately in cold water, because some colour release is normal. A spoon of salt in the first soak is a common household habit, though it will not fix dyes that are already loose. Turn garments inside out to protect prints, and dry them in the shade - strong sun fades colour faster than washing does.

Linen and linen blends

Linen gets softer with every wash and creases naturally. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and avoid overloading the machine. Skip the tumble dryer, which can shrink linen, and iron on medium heat while the fabric is still slightly damp. If you enjoy the relaxed look, simply hang the garment and let the creases soften on their own.

Rayon and viscose

Rayon drapes beautifully but is weak when wet. Hand wash in cold water, do not wring or twist, and roll the garment in a towel to remove water. Dry flat or on a padded hanger. Expect slight shrinkage in the first wash; a warm iron on the reverse usually eases it back.

Monsoon habits

  • Make sure clothes are completely dry before folding them away, or mildew spots can appear within days.
  • Keep cupboards ventilated and use cotton bags, not plastic, for stored garments.
  • Silica gel sachets or a small bag of neem leaves in the cupboard can help with dampness and odours.
  • Air out stored sarees and festive wear every few months and refold them along different lines to avoid permanent creases.

Detergent and stains

Use a mild liquid detergent for printed and dark clothes, and save bleach for plain white cotton only. Treat stains quickly with cold water - hot water can set protein stains such as food and sweat. For turmeric stains, a little dish soap and sunlight on the stained area often helps.

Finally, always check the care label. When the label and a general tip disagree, follow the label.
