How to measure yourself for the perfect fit online

· By Style Desk · 3 min read

Most returns in online fashion come down to one thing: fit. Sizes vary between brands, so the most reliable way to order is to compare your own measurements with each product's size chart. All you need is a soft measuring tape, a mirror and five minutes.

Before you start

  • Measure over thin clothing or a fitted vest, not over a jacket or sweater.
  • Keep the tape snug but not tight - you should be able to slide one finger underneath.
  • Stand naturally and breathe normally; do not hold your stomach in.
  • Write the numbers down in inches and centimetres, since charts use both.

Women: bust, waist and hip

Bust: measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape level across the back. Waist: measure at the narrowest part of the torso, usually just above the navel. Hip: stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of the hips. For kurtas, the bust and hip measurements matter most; for palazzos and skirts, check the waist and hip.

Men: chest, waist and inseam

Chest: measure under the arms around the fullest part of the chest. Waist: measure where you normally wear your trousers, not necessarily your natural waist. Inseam: the easiest way is to measure a pair of trousers that fits well, from the crotch seam down to the hem. Our jeans sizes map directly to waist inches, so S is 30, M is 32 and so on.

Kids

Kidswear is labelled by age, but children of the same age can differ a lot. Measure chest and height, and compare with the chart rather than relying on age alone. For festive outfits that will be worn for a season, a size up with a hem tuck is usually wiser than a perfect fit today.

Feet

Measure feet in the evening, when they are at their largest. Stand on a sheet of paper, mark the back of the heel and the tip of the longest toe, and measure the distance. Do both feet and use the longer measurement. If you are between two UK sizes, go up for sneakers and stay with the smaller size for leather shoes and juttis, which stretch slightly with wear.

Reading the size chart

Size charts list either body measurements or garment measurements. A garment chest of 42 inches on a regular-fit shirt is designed for a body chest of about 38-40 inches, leaving room to move. When a product page mentions the model's height and size, use it as a quick reference too.
